What an llms.txt file looks like

llms.txt is a Markdown file proposed in 2024 to give language models a short map of a site. It has a fixed shape: one H1 with the site's name, an optional quoted summary, then H2 sections that each list links as - [Title](url): note. A section called Optional marks links a model can skip.

The checker reads your file line by line and reports anything that breaks that shape: a missing or second H1, links outside a section, relative or broken URLs, and pages that redirect or return an error.

What matters more than llms.txt

AI answers cite pages their crawlers could fetch and read, that rank for the question, and that other sites mention. If you have an hour to spend on AI search, spend it on the AI search readiness checker first: a blocked crawler or a page that needs JavaScript to show its text costs far more than a missing llms.txt.

Questions

Does llms.txt help me rank in Google or get cited by AI?
There's no evidence it does. Google says its search, AI Overviews included, ignores llms.txt, and studies of server logs find AI crawlers rarely request it. It is cheap to add and can help coding assistants and agents that look for it, so treat it as a small extra, not a ranking lever.
What's the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?
llms.txt is a short index: a title, a summary and lists of links to your key pages. llms-full.txt, where a site offers one, holds the full text of those pages in one Markdown file. The checker reports whether you have each.
Where do I put the file?
At the root of your domain, so it loads at yoursite.com/llms.txt, served as plain text. Many hosts serve a 404 page or the home page for unknown paths; the checker flags a web page served in its place.
How is the draft built?
From your home page's title and description, your sitemap's URLs grouped by section, and the titles of your main pages. Read it before you publish: rewrite the summary in your words and drop pages that don't help someone understand your site.
